Spyware is a relatively recent invention, though that does not mean that it isn’t harmful to the smooth operation of your computer. In fact, spyware is probably the leading cause behind computer slow downs, crashes, and overall poor performance.

Anti-Spyware programs have been around almost as long as spyware has, yet it was not until recently that the programs that were already on the market evolved into applications that were user friendly, capable, and cost-effective.

An Anti-Spyware application should have, at the minimum, three main features:

Real-time monitoring – This ensures that no spyware installs itself between full system scans, and like an anti-virus, round the clock protection is always a good thing to have.

Comprehensive detection – The program must be able to detect the major spyware, malware, and adware threats. Furthermore, it must be able to clean the identified programs.

Updatability – Since spyware is constantly evolving, the application designed to get rid of it must do the same as well.

All of our testing was done in a controlled environment, and we Norton Ghosted the computer for each program. This means that each program received the exact same situation, including the software installed (and the spyware to go with it).

The market is full of products that offer mediocre or sub-par spyware protection. You can buy a spyware program for less than $10, but I can say, with a fair degree of certainty (I guarantee it, in fact), that the results will be less than overwhelming. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did nothing at all. Yet, at the same time, there are also products which offer excellent, or at least satisfactory, protection.

Let’s paint a portrait that accurately shows what spyware really is. Many people (most, in fact) don’t actually know what spyware is, they only pretend to. Bombardments of what you do and do not need to have on your computer for “protection” lead to paranoia- this is when parents yell at their kids for viewing websites or downloading from the internet, even though, 99% of the time, its not the kids that have created the problem.
