PC-Cillin Review
One of the oldest anti-viruses around, PC-Cillin is a testament to the fact that a good product, combined with technical support that is equally as good, has a long shelf life. This is important because many anti-viruses have come and gone, yet PC-Cillin is still here. That shows something, doesn't it?

PC-Cillin is full of useful features, and for the average user, is more than capable for nearly any task that they could ever have. PC-Cillin is updated frequently, scans for just about everything, and it runs in the background to ensure constant protection.
For those who want a more technical explanation, let us digress. PC-Cillin is automatically updated on a regular schedule, and though PC-Cillin doesn't issue formal notices about potentially dangerous viruses or threats, it is updated often enough that it won't be a problem anyway. The program scans against viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware (including various types of rootkits), and malware.
PC-Cillin can be set to scan automatically on a schedule, and is easily configurable. All the user needs to do is spend a few minutes setting up the scheduler, and then the rest is automatic.
Using PC-Cillin
The install process is simple, and we doubt that anyone will have a problem with that component of the software. Once installed, the program begins to run automatically on the default settings. We had to go in, open it up, and then begin the configuration process. So far, everything is pretty standard.
A few years ago, PC-Cillin caused a slight decrease in system performance as a result of the real-time monitor running in the background. We are pleased to see that it is no longer the case, and we were unable to discern any difference in performance. This is a refreshing change, and it is a great thing for future PC-Cillin users.
The virus libraries are updated constantly. During our testing (7 days), the anti-virus was updated 6 times. That's a lot of updates, and each update only took two or three minutes on our high speed connection. We can't imagine them taking much more than 5 or 6 minutes on a dial-up connection.
We had PC-Cillin run a full system scan every morning at 4:13, and sure enough, when we get on the computer (at 9 am or so) there was a summary of the virus scan, the time that it ran at, and the time that it completed at. Each scan only took 12 minutes, and considering that our hard drives exceed 600 gigabytes, that's mighty impressive.
Conclusion
We're glad to see that an old favorite is just as strong as ever. Though we'd like to see a few more features, such as packet protection, this anti-virus is more than suitable for just about all but the most jaded of users.
