2009 F-Secure Anti-Virus Review
We find it hard to sit down and review all of these products. After all, each one has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, and we hate to have to be the ones that point them out. If a product has made it into our top five, however, you can bet that it is already a great product. However, there’s probably one or two things about the competing products that we liked better.
Take F-Secure as an example. This anti-virus is very capable, user friendly, easy to operate and look at, and it performs quite well. In fact, there is very little that we don’t like about the program. The problem comes from the fact that there are a few things that we like about the competing products better.
However, that’s just our personal opinion, and we encourage you to try them all out and see which ones you like best.
Features
F-Secure has all of the standard anti-virus features, including real-time monitoring, incoming/outgoing e-mail monitoring, automatic updates, and update notification. Unlike several other programs, F-Secure anti-virus includes a spyware scanner, which has proven quite adept at detecting and cleaning the system-clogging applications.
Using F-Secure Anti-Virus
Since F-Secure Anti-Virus is actually two applications we’ve decided to review the overall package, and then each individual component.
The application did give a small decrease in performance, but it is small and barely noticeable. In fact, the only reason that we are saying that it has any kind of performance hit at all is because the CPU usage went from 1% to 2% after we installed the package, and though we can’t say for certain that it is a result of the anti-virus, we have to concede the extra 1% decrease in performance.
Anti-Virus
The anti-virus component of F-Secure does a great job. It cleans out all the infestations, and prevents them from becoming active again. Whatever the program can’t clean, it will give you the option to either delete or quarantine it.
We tried downloading files that were contaminated with viruses, and the program intercepted each and every one of them. We even tried viruses that we didn’t think ever became popularized, but the program recognized them, cleaned them, and then proceeded to allow us to execute the file.
Overall, very impressive.
Anti-Spyware
The spyware scanner is quite standard, though it did a sufficient job of scanning our hard drive for junk, deleting it, and then providing us with a quite extensive log file about what it did. We actually noticed a small increase in the performance of our computer after running this application for the first time.
Conclusion
We are quite happy with the application. Like we said earlier, there is nothing wrong with F-Secure, only a few things that we like better about the competition. However, F-Secure is a very capable and well-rounded product that is both a great value and worthy of your consideration.
