Cyber Patrol Review
I can recall, as a child, having an application installed on my computer which prevented my from accessing the majority of what the internet had to offer. I didn't know it then, but now I realize that the software was an internet filter, and it was not a very good one.
The software that my mother had installed on the computer only allowed access to websites that were specifically granted by the computer administrator. That mean that if www.yahoo.com wasn't on the safe list the software wouldn't allow the website to open. At first it wasn't such a big deal, but after nagging at my mother daily over websites that I couldn't view, she opted to simply remove it.
CyberPatrol is not like that, and you may find the program especially suited to your needs.
Features
The feature list is very standard: keyword filtering, blacklisted phrase/keyword/website filtering, search phrase filtering, IM filtering. Though there is no way to set up a user profile for each user, there are website and program profiles.
Using CyberPatrol
This program runs in the background, and it does an excellent job of blocking questionable or obscene websites. Pornography was not able to slip through the content filters, and we found ourselves unable to actually search for it as well. We tried other websites, such as Warez or extremely graphic websites, and they, too, were blocked.
However, this program did come with a fair bit of overblocking, though it certainly wasn't anything that we couldn't live with. A simple override function would have been nice, but we suppose that we can deal with the trouble of having to �"unblock†and entire website if we want access.
There is no way that any kid is going to take this software down, and we are quite happy to be able to say that. This software is very thorough, and when it comes to your kids, that's exactly what you want.
Conclusion
Another solid entry into the content filtering market, we are fond of this application because of its ease of use and streamlined performance. We would like to see the addition of a few features, such as an instant override option, but we can certainly make do with what have have for the time being as well.
