Internet Filter

CYBERsitter

Oh wow- I never thought I'd see the day where I'd be sitting down and reviewing the same program that, just 7 years ago, made surfing the internet the bane of my existence. When this application was first launched it was royal pain in the butt- as a child, I was unable to access just about everything on the internet that was actually worth looking at. I wasn't even viewing pornographic material, though with the way this program was blocking websites, I might as well have been!

As an adult, it's refreshing to read that kind of sentiment towards this application. My only real hope is that CyberSitter is just as effective as it used to be, though I can't foresee it becoming less effective with time. On the whole, these types of applications are constantly refined and revised until the optimum formula is found. So, is the latest version it?

Features

There are no features here that really stand out besides the system scan for questionable material, though that is more of a gimmick than anything. Everything else is fairly standard:

blacklisting, website blocking, etc.

Nothing spectacular to report here.

Using CyberSitter

Ooh how I hated this program growing up. Tried as I might, I as never able to circumvent the filtering that this program put me through. Though I probably could now, I definitely couldn't then. By the looks of it, the security for this software has improved, making it even more difficult for a child or teenager to disable the software.

CyberSitter is still fantastic, blocking every objectionable and pornographic website I threw at it. I was still able to see a picture of breasts, though I did have to do some extremely creative and clever manipulation of the keywords to accomplish it. I highly doubt that your son or daughter would spend the 45 minutes or more that it took to accomplish that feat.

I also tried old keywords that bypassed the filtering in the old program, but I was disappointed to find out that they had been blocked. I guess the software really has changed over the years.

Conclusion

An oldie but a goodie. This is content filtering done right, like it should be done, at a price that anyone can afford.

Net Nanny

 Net Nanny

Along with CyberSitter, Net Nanny is one content filtering program that has been around since the dawn of computing time. I can remember when I was a 11 year old kid, back in 1997, having my online exploration efforts thwarted by this annoying program called Net Nanny. It kept me from looking at online comics, some games, and violent websites. Probably a great thing in retrospect, it was definitely the most annoying thing ever when I was 11.

I can recall, as a child, having an application installed on my computer which prevented my from accessing the majority of what the internet had to offer. I didn't know it then, but now I realize that the software was an internet filter, and it was not a very good one.

MaxProtect

Encompassing every aspect of your computer, MaxProtect accomplishes exactly what you want it without causing any pains or headaches. The software is a bit more expensive than some competing products, but we would be happy to pay it for the capability that it delivers. However, because we are doing an evaluation, we do have to take the price ($80) into consideration. It would have been rated higher, but at nearly $60 more expensive than its closest competition, we simply could not justify giving it equal weight.

If you have children who use the internet, you should probably have some kind of vested interest in preventing them from accessing pornographic or illicit material. Keep your kids out of trouble is one of the responsibilities that you signed up for when you became a parent, and it's something that's amazingly difficult to accomplish when it comes to internet use.
