Internet Filter

MaxProtect

Encompassing every aspect of your computer, MaxProtect accomplishes exactly what you want it without causing any pains or headaches. The software is a bit more expensive than some competing products, but we would be happy to pay it for the capability that it delivers. However, because we are doing an evaluation, we do have to take the price ($80) into consideration. It would have been rated higher, but at nearly $60 more expensive than its closest competition, we simply could not justify giving it equal weight.

Features

The features are relatively standard for internet filters. You can block keywords, phrases, web sites, keyword lists, monitor blocking reports, and generally be kept informed about what was happening and when.

Using MaxProtect

This software is very powerful, and it does an excellent job at filtering out blocked/blacklisted keywords and phrases. When installed, we weren't even able to un searches for blacklisted keywords, such as sex or boob. MaxProtect either shut the application down, or (upon specification), simply refused operation of the command.

Unfortunately for us, we were unable to easily access pornography. However, we were able to access content about hacking and bombing by being careful in what we searched for. We aren't going to release the phrases that we searched, but it is safe to say that it can be done. However, we feel confident in this programs ability to perform, as we sat there for nearly an hour trying to figure out a way to outsmart the application.

The software did block 99% of the pornographic material that we tried to view, and we're positive that you'd never be able to squeak some pornography though its filters.

The program is able to tell the difference between phrases like “boob” and breast, and we were able to bring up cooking related websites and search phrases.

Conclusion

This software is very capable- we would have rated this application higher, but at $80, we were forced to take that into consideration. We would love to see the price drop just a bit.

Net Nanny

 Net Nanny

Along with CyberSitter, Net Nanny is one content filtering program that has been around since the dawn of computing time. I can remember when I was a 11 year old kid, back in 1997, having my online exploration efforts thwarted by this annoying program called Net Nanny. It kept me from looking at online comics, some games, and violent websites. Probably a great thing in retrospect, it was definitely the most annoying thing ever when I was 11.

Oh wow- I never thought I'd see the day where I'd be sitting down and reviewing the same program that, just 7 years ago, made surfing the internet the bane of my existence. When this application was first launched it was royal pain in the butt- as a child, I was unable to access just about everything on the internet that was actually worth looking at. I wasn't even viewing pornographic material, though with the way this program was blocking websites, I might as well have been!

CyberPatrol

I can recall, as a child, having an application installed on my computer which prevented my from accessing the majority of what the internet had to offer. I didn't know it then, but now I realize that the software was an internet filter, and it was not a very good one.

If you have children who use the internet, you should probably have some kind of vested interest in preventing them from accessing pornographic or illicit material. Keep your kids out of trouble is one of the responsibilities that you signed up for when you became a parent, and it's something that's amazingly difficult to accomplish when it comes to internet use.
