Internet Security Suite

F-Secure

Your computer is a treasure trove of personal information, browsing habits, and perhaps even credit card or business information. Taking steps to prevent the possible compromise of this information is incredibly important, and though many people make half-hearted attempts buy enabling Windows Firewall or hiding their files, an intruder can easily bypass Windows Firewall and download your entire hard drives contents.

F-Secure is a three pronged security suite: it has an anti-virus, which is quite capable and very user friendly, a firewall, which is a strong program and quite manageable, and automatic updatability, to ensure that the software is always performing the best that it can.

The last feature may not seem like much, but with the online landscape constantly changing and always evolving, you want to make sure that your security suite is ready to meet the new demands.
Features

As we mentioned earlier, F-Secure Internet Security is a three pronged suite. The anti-virus is one of the best that we've used, and we have yet to have a virus slip by. It has the option of deleting the file, quarantining the file, or cleaning the virus. For certain file types a clean may not be an option, so you can choose between quarantining the virus or simply deleting the entire file.

The internet filtering program, called Internet Shield, allows you to customized protocols and port use. Being configurable is in important, as you may encounter situations which may require you to open up certain ports (torrent downloading or online games, for example). The firewall has included application control, allowing you to choose whether certain programs are given access to the internet or not.

Using F-Secure

The program operates immediately after it is installed using the default settings. This will be fine for most people, though you may feel the need to go into the configuration menu and open up ports if you plan on doing any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading.

The anti-virus runs in the background and without error, and it managed to catch every virus attempt that we threw at it. It has a database of virus in the high thousands, so you can feel confident about your protection. The anti-virus's database is updated several times a week, and it is automated automatically.

We found that configuring the firewall was a bit of an experience, though it certainly wasn't difficult. New users may wish to read the help documentation before attempting to make any changes, however, as the menu's and screens can be intimidating. We found that navigating through them was a bit difficult at first, but it was relatively easy to learn and we got the hang of it pretty quickly. We feel that just about everyone will get the hang of the program without any major problems.

Configuring the various components of the application, such as the program control, was pretty easy. Make sure to read the documentation when attempting it for the first time to avoid any mistakes, though you certainly won't need help after that.

Conclusion

F-Secure Internet Security is a very capable program. The anti-virus protection is top-notch, and the firewall is capable and ready to go. Overall, a recommended program that is worthy of your consideration and purchase.

McAfee

McAfee Internet Security

The only real competitor to Norton Internet Security, McAfee is in the same situation as the previously mentioned application. McAfee is known for being reliable, easy to use, and capable. I can recall, about 12 years ago or so, swearing by McAfee products. As far as I was concerned, it was McAfee or bust. I had seen dozens of anti-virus programs, and McAfee was the only one that I would ever use. It was reliable, it worked, and it did all of that without me having to know how it was doing it.

Norton

Norton Internet Security

Symantec has been publishing its Norton series of products for quite a few years now, and a lot of people swear by the brand. Norton is, after all, synonymous with quality, performance, and ease of use. In the past, Norton has been the name of anti-virus', firewalls, and other software suites that have been designed with the end user in mind. A person could literally install, configure, and run nearly any Norton product without having to consult a complicated user manual or experience frustrating issues.

How much confidence do you place in your product? No matter what you do, there needs to be some kind of standard in place, a warranty if you will, that shows that you back your products. Retail chains, such as Best Buy or Sears, offer return periods and warranties, while manufacturers offer warranties and grace periods. For a consumer, the sheer amount of personal protection is uncanny.
