The average computer houses more personal information and sensitive data now than it ever has before. This is due to the increased use of computers at both work and at home, along with the growing competence among the population when it comes to actually using them. It only makes sense to actively take steps to protect your computer and the information that is contained in it.

An Internet Security Suite will contain various components designed to protect your computer from various threats, such as viruses or hackers. These suites are complex, though effective, solutions to problems that you may or may not have to face. Regardless, hindsight is 20/20, though foresight is something that could save you a lot of time and effort.

The three big features that you should look out for when decided on which suite to go with are:

  • Firewall – Make sure the suite you are choosing has a good built-in firewall. This prevents unauthorized internet traffic from entering or exiting your computer.
  • Anti-Virus – Arguably the most important part of the security suite, the anti-virus will keep damaging viruses off of your computer. This keeps your computer running smoothly, and it keeps your data safe from destruction.
  • Anti-Spyware – This keeps spyware/adware/maleware/nagware from entering your computer, slowing it down and possible compromising your data.

The fact is that you need an internet security suite. Not having one is gambling, and when it comes to things like credit card numbers, is it really worth the risk?

McAfee

McAfee Internet Security

The only real competitor to Norton Internet Security, McAfee is in the same situation as the previously mentioned application. McAfee is known for being reliable, easy to use, and capable. I can recall, about 12 years ago or so, swearing by McAfee products. As far as I was concerned, it was McAfee or bust. I had seen dozens of anti-virus programs, and McAfee was the only one that I would ever use. It was reliable, it worked, and it did all of that without me having to know how it was doing it.

Norton

Norton Internet Security

Symantec has been publishing its Norton series of products for quite a few years now, and a lot of people swear by the brand. Norton is, after all, synonymous with quality, performance, and ease of use. In the past, Norton has been the name of anti-virus', firewalls, and other software suites that have been designed with the end user in mind. A person could literally install, configure, and run nearly any Norton product without having to consult a complicated user manual or experience frustrating issues.

How much confidence do you place in your product? No matter what you do, there needs to be some kind of standard in place, a warranty if you will, that shows that you back your products. Retail chains, such as Best Buy or Sears, offer return periods and warranties, while manufacturers offer warranties and grace periods. For a consumer, the sheer amount of personal protection is uncanny.

Your computer is a treasure trove of personal information, browsing habits, and perhaps even credit card or business information. Taking steps to prevent the possible compromise of this information is incredibly important, and though many people make half-hearted attempts buy enabling Windows Firewall or hiding their files, an intruder can easily bypass Windows Firewall and download your entire hard drives contents.
