Norton Internet Security

Symantec has been publishing its Norton series of products for quite a few years now, and a lot of people swear by the brand. Norton is, after all, synonymous with quality, performance, and ease of use. In the past, Norton has been the name of anti-virus', firewalls, and other software suites that have been designed with the end user in mind. A person could literally install, configure, and run nearly any Norton product without having to consult a complicated user manual or experience frustrating issues.

For these reasons we are going to review Norton a bit more critically than most. This is not because w feel that it is a superior product, or that its quality is any different than what we are used to.

In fact, this is only because the name “Norton” means a lot of things to a lot of people, and regardless of their reputation, Symantec has to live up to their reputation. So, when we reviewed this product, we were constantly asking ourselves “is it what we've come toexpect from Norton?”

Features

Norton Internet Security is a well featured package. It contains a firewall, an anti-virus, “Norton Systemworks”, and anti-spyware. All of these applications, even on their own, are excellent in their own right. Combined together, we should see an excellent example of compatibility and performance.

The firewall is relatively standard, giving you control over nearly every aspect of your internet connection. We're sure that the default settings are just fine, though you can get in there and fine tune certain things (such as port forwarding or application control).

The anti-virus is probably world famous. This is the application which made the name “Norton” famous. As always, it runs in the background, and has the options of various different types of scans and cleaning sweeps.

The anti-spyware application is also quite standard. From our experience, it is no better or no worse than competing products.

Norton Systemworks is a great program that will go through your computer and find out where it can streamline things, making your computer perform better and operate more efficiently.

Using Norton Internet Security

Once we had installed Norton it went right to work, requiring almost no configuration from us. Since this product is marketed at an audience that probably doesn't know, or want to know, how to configure various applications, we're going to call this a good thing.

The antivirus and firewall require no interaction at all when they are running. They just sit in the background, and an occasional popup or two will blink on screen, asking us for guidance. It's usually wondering if it can unblock a specific programs internet access. The other two applications, Norton Systemworks and the anti-spyware, require you to get involved, but neither one of them are mind boggling. In fact, they're both deceptively simple to use. After you've done it once you'll know what we mean.

Conclusion

This program lives up to its reputation. Once again, we are given a new and updated version of an old favorite.

McAfee

McAfee Internet Security

The only real competitor to Norton Internet Security, McAfee is in the same situation as the previously mentioned application. McAfee is known for being reliable, easy to use, and capable. I can recall, about 12 years ago or so, swearing by McAfee products. As far as I was concerned, it was McAfee or bust. I had seen dozens of anti-virus programs, and McAfee was the only one that I would ever use. It was reliable, it worked, and it did all of that without me having to know how it was doing it.

How much confidence do you place in your product? No matter what you do, there needs to be some kind of standard in place, a warranty if you will, that shows that you back your products. Retail chains, such as Best Buy or Sears, offer return periods and warranties, while manufacturers offer warranties and grace periods. For a consumer, the sheer amount of personal protection is uncanny.

Your computer is a treasure trove of personal information, browsing habits, and perhaps even credit card or business information. Taking steps to prevent the possible compromise of this information is incredibly important, and though many people make half-hearted attempts buy enabling Windows Firewall or hiding their files, an intruder can easily bypass Windows Firewall and download your entire hard drives contents.
